Born in London, educated at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Dorothy Swain (1922-2018) lived most of her life in Sussex. The county was the subject of many of her landscape paintings, which number over 330, but she was also well respected for her flower compositions. During the 1950s, three of her works were selected for the prestigious Royal Academy exhibition, before art was forced to take more of a backseat in favour of family life (married to Alfred, with four children). In the 1970s, by request, she started and led painting classes in and around the Heathfield and Uckfield areas of East Sussex for around 30 years and was at her most prolific as an artist during this time too.
